Solution Description:
A next generation multi-purposed battery generating power with bio-inspired design for safe, signature free operation using high energy density fuels (glucose/alcohol), capable of instant recharge, light weight, and standardized footprint requirements of the DoD. There is a need for long runtime remote power sources with low signatures which could be used for unattended ground sensors in clandestine environments. Traditional batteries including Li-ion do not offer as much energy density as glucose and alcohol and other power generation (e.g. generators/fuel cells) produce unwanted heat signatures. Renewable energy such as solar/wind are not reliable enough. The high energy density, mediator free operation, extended runtime, fuel flexibility, fuel refilling capability, reduced weight, and storage stability capabilities provides the soldier a decisive advantage in a remote location and in field settings. The fully integrated system can be scaled up to provide higher operating voltages (12V) to allow ease-of-integration and compatibility with existing DoD electronic systems. CFD Research has spent over 9 years on the development of its BioBattery™ product via multiple SBIR efforts as well as funding from a prime contractor. The BioBattery program was selected by the Army for its “SBIR Achievement Award” (presented to top 2% of all programs).Learn More
